Bravest Man Award & Recipients
The Calgary’s Bravest Man Award recognizes a prominent male community leader who has made a remarkable contribution to raising awareness of the issue of domestic abuse in Calgary.
Award nominees are selected for their achievements in advocating for the prevention of domestic abuse by speaking publicly about the issue and committing to the cause by serving as a volunteer on domestic abuse prevention or related committees. Candidates are openly opposed to domestic violence by their words or their actions. They serve as volunteers on committees trying to prevent domestic violence, by funding such causes or by speaking out about the issue.

Gordon (Gord) Wong, Chief Crown Prosecutor was recognized in 2008 as the Calgary’s Bravest Man Award recipient for moving the Calgary Court system to be more responsive to the prosecution of domestic violence cases. In the Chief Crown Prosecutor role, Gord Wong expanded the way Domestic Violence prosecution is handled at the Calgary courts. Modelled after best practices, Calgary’s court system now has a passionate group of prosecutors dedicated specifically to domestic violence cases. Gordon Wong’s persistence and dedication to change our courts, opening the door to new and innovative approaches to violence prevention, enabling Calgary to operate effective committees and programs to raise awareness for forms of abuse and prevention initiatives and to be a leader in prevention and treatment in Canada. |

Former Calgary Mayor, Al Duerr, was recognized in 2007 as the inaugural Calgary's Bravest Man Award recipient, for moving domestic abuse onto his political agenda, and by doing so placing it on the both the municipal and provincial radar screen. In 1990 Mayor Al Duerr established an action-oriented task force called the Mayor’s Task Force on Community and Family Violence, to address forms of violence in Calgary. The Task Force ultimately laid the groundwork for a cooperative coalition of organizations dedicated to preventing forms of violence. |
