As of Sept. 14, 2009 Calgary Counselling Centre's education and training program is proud to be renamed the Haskayne Learning Centre for Graduate and Post-graduate Counselling Studies thanks to a generous donation from Dick and Lois Haskayne.

We offer learning opportunities at both the graduate and post-graduate level. Our Graduate Internship allows graduate students to learn practical counselling skills to complete their degree. Out Post-graduate Residency is designed to allow students who have completed their master's degree to gain counselling hours and training to become accredited in their field.

We believe that learning involves the acquisition of knowledge, the development of personal understanding , and application of theory in practice. This process requires self-awareness enhanced through interactions and personal reflection that lead to shared understanding and mutually beneficial relationships.

The Haskayne Learning Centre operates on the following principles:

  • A commitment to excellence in all elements of our programs.
  • A commitment to having the resources necessary to provide quality learning experiences.
  • A recognition of individual uniqueness and an honouring of how life experiences, personal strengths, professional training and work experience influences educational needs and approach to learning.
  • A respect for the uniqueness and complementarity of the different disciplines represented within the helping professions of psychology, social work, medicine, and pastoral care.
  • A commitment to being aware of the needs of all staff members, interns and residents and the need to provide relevant and timely training and learning opportunities.

On Sept. 14, 2009, at a special ceremony, the Centre's education program became the Haskayne Learning Centre for Graduate and Post-graduate Counselling Studies at Calgary Counselling Centre.

Lois, a former school teacher and her husband Richard (Dick), an officer of the Order of Canada, have played an important role in Calgary's business landscape.

Dick and Lois Haskayne's ongoing personal commitment to Calgary Counselling Centre goes back to Lois' decade on the Calgary Counselling Centre board of directors, from 1992 to 2001. The Haskaynes have been long-term donors to the Centre and have given generously to many specific projects, including the capital campaign in 2005 to renovate and expand the Centre. Annually, their generosity makes them one of our major donors.

The Haskayne Learning Centre will be an ongoing legacy providing future counselling practitioners with exceptional training opportunities. This will ensure the students we train are immediately employable and can make an instant impact post-graduation.
