Former Calgary Mayor Al Duerr receives “Calgary’s Bravest Man” Award
Calgary Counselling Centre honoured former Mayor Al Duerr for his remarkable work in the fight against domestic abuse at its 2nd annual gala, An Evening with Calgary’s Bravest Men this evening. Mr. Duerr was presented with the first Calgary’s Bravest Man Award for his efforts to bring the issue of abuse onto the political agenda beginning with the creation of the Mayor’s Task Force on Community and Family Violence in April 1990.

Calgary Counselling Centre highlights the hidden side of Domestic Abuse
Today’s report released by Statistics Canada on family violence in Canada identified the often hidden side of domestic abuse that occurs in families such as emotional and financial abuse and controlling behaviour. Emotional and financial abuse by spouses were identified by Statistics Canada as often being precursors to physical violence in a relationship --- including homicide.

Cake give away on Stephen Avenue Mall on Oct. 11, 2007
Calgary Counselling Centre (CCC) strives to conquer depression on Oct. 11, 2007. This will be the third time free depression screening offered by CCC and new efforts are in place to reach out to a larger demographic. CCC has teamed up with the great folks from the Calgary Downtown Association and Cakeworks to host a great cake giveaway on Stephen Avenue Mall today at noon to raise awareness for the event.

Parents - talk to your daughter and get her to take this test. It just may change her life
Calgary Counselling Centre is seeking females under 18 for their third annual National Depression Screening Day on Oct. 11, 2007. Free, confidential, depression screening will be available to all Calgarians through the Calgary Counselling Centre’s website on Oct. 11, 2007 -- with young women aged 18 and under being one of three risk groups the Centre hopes to target with this year’s campaign.

Local findings confirm Statistics Canada report
A recent Statistics Canada report on relationship breakdown and subsequent increased rates of depression parallels data collected by Calgary Counselling Centre during National Depression Screening Day in October, 2006.
Basic demographic data collected in the tests has been compared to the scores for depression. Divorced/separated men scored higher than divorced/separated women – 48 vs. 28 percent in their levels of depression. In fact, males who took the depression test on Oct. 5, 2006 recorded an overall higher level of depression - 15.4 out of 20 for men versus 13.1 for women. A large number of divorced/separated men were “strongly encouraged” to seek an evaluation beyond the online test.

Calgary Counselling Centre is hosting a professional workshop featuring renowned domestic violence experts, Alyce LaViolette, MSc. and Dr. Oliver Williams on Feb. 9 and 10, 2007 at the Best Western Village Park Inn. Working together, LaViolette and Williams will introduce participants to the experience of parents impacted by domestic violence and some of the dynamics present during the early stages of one's work with families where violence is a concern.

Calgary Counselling Centre requests for service in January highest in Centre history.
Calgary Counselling Centre has started January 2007 with a bang. The Centre experienced its largest number of requests for counselling services in January – 582 requests– a record for the first month of the year and the biggest January in the Centre’s 44 year history.
