Golfing Can-Can make a difference

CANCAN
Team Davies does the CAN CAN at Calgary Counselling Centre's 2nd Annual Charity Golf Classic

June 5, 2008 was a great day for golf at the prestigious River Spirit Golf Club. After a number of days of rain, the sun shone for Calgary Counselling Centre’s 2nd Annual Charity Golf Classic.

The tournament raised almost $30,000 for the Responsible Choices for Children and Parents program (RCC), preventing abusive and aggressive behaviour of children at home and at school. Since 1997, the program has lowered the rate of violent behaviour among youth. RCC helps children and their parents create an atmosphere together, where abusive or aggressive behaviours are replaced by positive, responsible choices.

But the tournament was about more than just golf. Because it benefited our program, we took the opportunity to give people a peek at how we help children and their families. We not only played golf, we played a little on the course and did a number of interactive activities at the holes, including:

  • playing with puppets to demonstrate empathy,
  • wearing giant listening ears to show how we teach communication skills to children
  • doing the CAN-CAN (the dance and a more serious activity) as an example of how children can learn competence and mastery in social situations

There was a lot of laughter and learning throughout the 18 holes.

Thanks to our incredible donors and sponsors for making the tournament profitable. Our donors’ contributions made the difference, making a nice sunny day so enjoyable for golfers, volunteers and the Charity Golf Classic organizing team.
