Centre staff member participates in “Break the Cycle” event

Karate China!

With no karate training, can China Marsh of CCC break a board herself at the Break the Cycle AKF karate event? Find out at 2 p.m. on Aug. 29, 2009 at North Hill Centre Mall.

When she moved jobs in February, Fund Development Associate China Marsh had no idea the new job would involve wood, lumber and bricks. Now six months into the new position, China is training to be one of the people breaking the cycle – karate chopping a board to end domestic abuse.

On Aug. 29, shoppers at North Hill Centre Mall will be able to watch students and instructors from the Karate at SAIT Club set personal goals to break a number of boards and bricks between 2 and 4 p.m. But China is one of the Centre’s staff taking on the challenge – just to see if she can break ONE board herself.

Richard Fossey, president of the Ohtsuka Amateur Karate Foundation (AKF) and the head instructor of the Karate at SAIT Club, decided to partner with Calgary Counselling Centre as he believed it would be a good fit. Students are taught self defense, confidence and non-violent solutions, along with the traditional karate values.

CCC is recognized as a leader in domestic abuse programming and research. Approximately one third of the Centre’s work addresses domestic abuse. Since 1981 the Centre has offered programs to meet the changing needs of our community as well as changing perceptions of treatment for domestic abuse. The Centre’s programs include group therapy for men and women who have experienced abuse, as well as group therapy for men and women who have been abusive in intimate relationships. We aim to end domestic abuse at its root source.

Last year the Karate at SAIT Club raised $11,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Fossey hopes to beat last year’s amount, aiming to raise $15,000 for the Centre and continue to partner with CCC in the future.
