Aspirations to set world record at the 2010 Break the Cycle Event

Karate Kid

This year’s 3rd Annual Break the Cycle event won’t be quite the same as any other. The Oktsuka Amateur Karate Foundation (AKF) Karate at SAIT Club is pleased to be back for the second time raising funds for Calgary Counselling Centre’s (CCC) Family Violence program in their annual bricks and boards breaking event. On Aug. 28 from 2-4 p.m. at the North Hill Centre Mall, the AKF club members will be attempting to break as many bricks as possible by a group.

“Building a compassionate community begins with the efforts of individuals,” says Mayor Bronconnier in his official proclamation of the event. “So many of the wonderful initiatives that exist in our community to aid Calgarians in need owe their existence to individuals and groups who recognize a need and take it upon themselves to answer that need with action.”

This year, to add drama to the otherwise exciting event, the Karate at SAIT club has applied to Guinness. Their application outlines their attempt for a world record, with their effort to be breaking as many patio blocks as they can.

Profiling the AKF Karate at SAIT club’s talents, the Break the Cycle event kicks off their season and is a recruitment event for the club. Students as young as five are taught a variety of skills including: self defense, confidence and non-violent solutions, all in coordination with traditional karate values. Funds raised from the event will go toward CCC’s Family Violence program. CCC is recognized as a leader in North American family violence research and treatment. Together we hope to “break the cycle” of domestic abuse.
