Why you should care about women’s curling on Feb. 16If you’re like us, you were excited about the Tim Horton’s Olympic Curling Trials on Dec. 12, 2009. But – wow, it was a nail biter.
According to the Calgary Herald, Cheryl Bernard played in front of the largest live crowd to watch a women’s curling game. Then, to make it really exciting for the fans, Cheryl waited until the last rock in the 10th end, to determine whether or not she’d represent Canada in February at the Olympics. Bernard’s win is a source of pride for Calgary Counselling Centre. We’ve been cheering Cheryl on for some time. In June, at our golf tournament, Olympic hopeful Cheryl Bernard, graciously allowed us to auction off her play The lucky team won second place because Cheryl’s not only a great curling skip, she’s a great athlete. “Helping a Centre dedicated to helping create healthy families was an easy task,” says Bernard. “I was pleased to be asked and happy to participate.” Having Cheryl on board for the 2009 golf tournament helped us raise over $32,000 - funds for our Children of Divorce program. Aligning with a soon-to-be Olympian, also helped us raise the profile of the tournament. We're hoping the connection to the Centre will mean Cheryl has extra luck, because Cheryl’s not the only Olympian connected to the Centre. Winning Olympic gold in Beijing was Nexen Call Centre volunteer, Carol Huynh (pronounced "win"). Carol has been a volunteer with our agency since 2007. We hope you’re rooting for Cheryl Bernard and the Canadian Olympic team. Cheryl’s team: Bernard, third Susan O’Connor, second Carolyn Darbyshire and lead Cori Bartel (the team is rounded out by alternate Kristie Moore and coach Dennis Balderston) will wear Canadian colours in Vancouver. Their first Olympic game is against Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott - Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at 14:00. The fourth annual River Spirit Golf Club Charity Golf Classic benefit will be later this summer. |
