Out and about for United Way
It honestly seemed like China Marsh, Fund Development Associate and Kathleen Bell, Communications Officer were playing hooky a LOT in September and October. Rest assured – they were still working. Both ladies from the Communications/Fund Development team were United Way Ambassadors of the Way volunteers for Calgary Counselling Centre this year. We’d like to think we made a difference in United Way’s successful 2009 campaign – reaching $49.6 million for our community. “It’s been really different this year,” says Kathleen. “When I first started at the Centre in 2006, we did the occasional speech for United Way. This year we did tours with companies, we participated in a few trade shows at companies and were still called on to do three to four speaking presentations a week.” The Ambassador of the Way program is one of the many ways an organization can learn more about community issues and how United Way builds stronger communities. Through a speaker series, trade shows and tours, organizations hosting a United Way campaign can help their employees understand why their donation to United Way makes a difference. “To share what their donation can do in their community can be an encouragement to give,” says Kathleen. “I have the lucky job of being able to pass along inspirational stories. Audiences really enjoy stories of breakthroughs, demonstrating the impact counselling has in the lives of our clients.” In addition to the public speaking commitments, Calgary Counselling Centre ran a successful United Way campaign of our own, donating over $5,800 to the city campaign. Calgary Counselling Centre is a proud United Way beneficiary. The Calgary and Area campaign funds both our Counselling program and our Family Violence program. In 2008, United Way funding represented 20 per cent of our operating budget. We are considered one of the United Way’s core agencies. |
