Great gifts - new funding partners

Calgary Counselling Centre has been an integral part of the Calgary community and surrounding area for nearly 50 years and is committed to assisting individuals and families to build better lives through counselling, training, research and community contribution.  We are delighted to be able to acknowledge several funders who believe in the work we do and have provided financial support for 2011. Here are our recent successes:

Bell Canada Foundation
We hope you participated in Bell Canada’s “Let’s Talk” community initiative this past February. It was part of the Bell Mental Health Community Fund, Bell Canada’s $50 million commitment to fund mental health initiatives nationally.  Bell’s “Let’s Talk” community initiative was a campaign committed to lessening the stigma associated with mental illness.

Calgary Counselling Centre is one of two Alberta agencies to receive funding from the Bell Mental Health Community Fund.  A recent Globe & Mail advertisement shows us in very prestigious company.  Bell Canada’s funds will ensure that we can continue to provide counselling support to any Calgarian who needs it regardless of their ability to pay.

Community Initiatives Program, Province of Alberta
Our fund development team had great news for our accounting team: provincial funding to purchase new accounting software. This September, Calgary Counselling Centre received a grant from the Alberta Community Initiatives Program to enable us to replace an accounting program the Centre outgrew years ago.

On Sept. 13, 2011, Centre CEO Robbie Babins-Wagner was invited to the McDougall Centre to meet with Calgary Caucus Chair Art Johnson, MLA Calgary Calgary-Hays to receive a grant from the province’s Community Initiatives Program, one of the few programs provincially and nationally that not-for-profits and charitable organizations can access for capital purchases. Updating our accounting systems will mean we can keep up with the demand for service we’re experiencing.

Trico Charitable Foundation/ Social Enterprise Initiative

With changing government funding and the fluctuation of donors' interests in giving, charities and nonprofits are looking for ways to be sustainable. Social enterprise is a new movement based on the tradition of social economy and Trico Charitable Foundation is one of the leaders on board to ensure Calgary is home to a community of sustainable and entrepreneurial non-profit organizations.

This spring, Trico Charitable Foundation (established in 2008 as an evolution of Wayne and Eleanor Chiu’s philanthropic endeavours), formally announced its new initiative: Calgary Counselling Centre is one of seven organizations to receive a grant in the inaugural round of applications.

The Centre will use the funding to engage an external consultant who will work with us to create a business model to support us in our goal to become self-sustaining and less reliant on external funding sources.
