CCC launches a new Adolescents Self-Esteem group
This fall, Calgary Counselling Centre responded to demand and introduced a new group: Self-Esteem for Adolescents – a program especially designed for adolescents at the Centre. The first session has just ended and we checked in to hear how the group went.
"I am thrilled how the first group developed," says Chantelle Quesnelle, Counselling Resident and the group facilitator. "We had 100 per cent retention of program participants and they flourished throughout the 12 weeks."
The Self-Esteem for Adolescents group provides an environment to share personal issues without judgment. Ranging in age from 13 – 17 years old, participants develop the tools to manage problems and issues at all stages in adolescence and into their adulthood.
"Creating this program filled a vital need," says Chantelle. "The Centre saw the gap in service and created this group, building on the success of the adult Self Esteem group. What was unique for adolescents is the importance for participants to experience validation from their peers – normalizing their problems lessens their feelings of isolation."
CCC was mindful to address adolescents' specific needs. Although the adolescent group includes topics from the adult version: positive self-talk, communication skills and body image; there was greater time paid to topics of peer relationships and family pressures.
An important distinction from the adult group was the change in group style. In the place of a round table discussion, facilitators use a more informal format to engage the group of adolescents. Discussion would take place during activities such as games and arts and crafts, so there was less pressure to participate. Individuals would feel more comfortable to share with the group.
CCC will offer another 12 week group starting in February.
