Controversial Issues in Family Violence

Biography of Speaker - Dr. Sandra M. Stith, PhD, LMFT

Dr. Sandra Stith worked at a shelter for battered women in the early 1980's and has published over 50 articles and book chapters on intimate partner violence since that time. Dr. Stith is a co-editor of three books on domestic violence including Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence to be published by Haworth Press and Understanding Partner Violence: Prevalence, Causes, Consequences and Solutions (1995), co-edited with Dr. Murray Straus. She and her colleagues at Virginia Tech received NIMH funding to develop a manualized couples treatment program for domestic violence in 1997. Since that time they have continued to refine their treatment model and have trained clinicians throughout the United States, Europe, Central and South America to use the approach. In 2004 she received the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy's “Outstanding Contribution to Marriage and Family Therapy” Award.
