Student internships, or practica, provide individuals with an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience within a community based counselling agency. During training individuals are involved in all aspects of the counselling process from initial contact to client follow-up. Interns may work with individuals, couples, families or groups within a variety of contexts.

Practica include weekly educational seminars, individual and group supervision, and many different opportunities to learn within a challenging and supportive environment. Calgary Counselling Centre works with many different universities in offering undergraduate and graduate level practica/internships. Some of the learning opportunities involved in the different types of programs are listed below.

  • Intake/Call Centre training
    Including suicide prevention and crisis response training and work on the Intake lines.
  • Research
    A student may be involved in a research project relating to the counselling profession.
  • Presentations
    A student may be responsible for researching community resources available for a particular population or presenting concern, would update our agency resource manual and do a presentation to agency personnel.
  • Group Experience
    An intern may assist, or work with the group facilitators, or be a member of a reflecting team for the following group programs:
    Children of Divorce or Separation group
    Responsible Choices for Children and Parents
    Responsible Choices groups
    You’re Not Alone
    Turn For The Better
    Eating Disorders Program’s
    Women and Self-esteem
  • Counselling experience
    An intern may be involved in observation of counselling session, co-therapy with a supervisor or designate, and if deemed appropriate undergraduate students may work with individuals, couples or families.

  • Intake training
    Including suicide prevention and crisis response training and work on the Intake/Call Centre lines.
  • Quick Response
    A session designated for individuals in crisis.
  • Individual, couple & family counselling
    Each intern is responsible for a number of clients – each student’s anticipated caseload would be negotiated between the intern, their supervisor and their respective program.
  • Group work
    Possibilities include assisting, co-facilitating,or facilitating, or being part of a reflecting team for the following programs:
  • Other
    Graduate students may be involved in the development and delivery of community-based training. Each situation would be considered separately.
